This year marks the ten-year anniversary of saying goodbye to my lovely mum, Lorna. In some ways, it feels like yesterday, and in others, I’m reminded of all the life milestones that have happened since then - milestones she’s not been with us for but would have adored being part of.
It’s hard to put into words all the things that made her so special and so loved, and it’s been even harder to miss those things every day. I feel incredibly lucky that she was my mum. She was someone who always had great get-up-and-go, embraced the silly, and always pushed Chantal and me to believe that we could do hard things. These are all things I try to build into my life, and I know that she would be proud of me today.
To mark this anniversary, I am taking on two marathons in a 6 week period - Rome and Manchester - to raise money for an amazing cancer research charity, Action Against Cancer. When I first attempted running, I trained poorly, went out the night before, and hobbled around the Cardiff St. David’s Day 10K. Even though it was a small achievement compared to my sister’s consistently high sporting performance, my parents came to support me with the same dedication they had always shown her. They backed me all the way. So as I look back at how far I’ve come, I know that Mum will be cheering me on as I take on this challenge!
If you are considering making a charitable donation this year, I would hugely appreciate your support. You’d be helping Action Against Cancer fund the development of cures for cancer at leading institutions such as Imperial College London, the University of Sussex, the University of Manchester, and Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. Action Against Cancer provides crucial seed funding to innovative projects that could not secure support from other sources.
When you make your donation through Givey, the charity receives 100% of the donation.
