About
Case Study Emma (name changed for anonymity) a mum has a nightmare ex partner who has tormented her for six years, forcing her to flee to Leicestershire, and how she received guidance and support from Shelter Housing Advice and Research Project to find a decent and safe home for her children. Emma had been with her partner for four years and had a child with him. He ended up in prison as a result of the way he treated her, but his campaign of abuse didn't stop there. The woman says he was able to contact people from prison who then kidnapped their child and set fire to the house she was living in. She also received multiple threats from her former partner telling her that he would kill her while her own children watched - as well as threatening other members of her family. Her mum and dad don't even know where she lives anymore. She cannot risk it, as she is afraid that he will find out and send someone to hurt her and my children. He threatened to have her beaten up, raped, and even killed. She lived in constant fear because of him. But when she relocated to Leicestershire, she began having different problems - living in an unsafe house - which worsened her fears of her children being at risk. The place she lived in had constant issues, the electric didn't work, the boiler didn't work, the door was damaged and didn't even have a peephole to look through. She was too scared to open the door to anyone. "You could have leaned on a window and it would have fallen out, it was in such a bad state of disrepair. "It was just an unsafe place for me to live and raise my children, so I knew I had to move out. I literally couldn't go on like that." So Emma contacted Shelter Housing Advice and Research Project (SHARP), for help finding somewhere else to live. "I wanted to move out for the safety of myself and my children.” "But I was very lucky to have been helped by the charity meaning I could find a new Private Rented Property.” "I honestly can't thank them enough, being able to live somewhere safe with my children matters so much to me, and it's only possible because of SHARP. I will always be grateful for what they have done." SHARP want to help more people like Emma, however as many landlords require large deposit and rents in advance, and many of these families are on low incomes they do not have the funds.
