Let Kakuma Read Thank you for visiting our Givey page. More than 320,000 people live in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Many are children and young people. Yet access to books, libraries and safe places to read and learn is extremely limited. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to discover the world through books. That is why Just be a Child is building the Kakuma Community Library Network — an ambitious, refugee-led network of community libraries across the camp. Our goal is to establish 10 libraries, each containing around 5,000 books, providing free access to reading, learning and skills development for people of all ages. The libraries will be managed and operated by refugee-led Community Based Organisations, putting the project firmly in the hands of the communities it serves. We are not simply building libraries. We are building a network. We want refugees to be recognised not only for the challenges they face, but for their ideas, leadership, skills and aspirations. By giving communities ownership of their own libraries, we hope to create lasting places where people can read, learn, meet and build their futures. We have already established 67 community libraries across Kenya, including nine shipping-container libraries that are operating successfully. Now we want to take what we have learned and build something truly ambitious in Kakuma — a model that could eventually be replicated in refugee communities around the world.
