Running the Hackney Half Marathon for The Unity Project
About

I am running the Hackney Half Marathon in May to raise money for The Unity Project, a small charity that supports migrants with 'No Recourse to Public Funds' (NRPF).

The NRPF condition is applied to migrants as a condition of their Leave to Remain, they are allowed to work and pay taxes but are unable to claim any benefits, this includes free school meals for their children and universal credit for times when they cannot work due to sickness.

The Unity Project is staffed by a small, dedicated and overworked team, and many volunteers including some that have been subjected to the NRPF condition themselves. It helps people apply to the Home Office to have this sanction lifted as well as campaigning to get this punishing policy withdrawn. The charity also conducts research into the effects of the policy and runs workshops for people to make applications themselves. They also provide hot meals, support and child care. It is amazing.

I'm not very confident of making it to the start line without injury as I don't think I have ever run more than 5k and there is not much time left to train! I am also aware that the run may not go ahead due to the Covid-19 virus, but in any case do donate. The families that the charity support will be hard hit if they get ill as they will have no support, some of the funds donated will be used to help those most in need.

When you make your donation through Givey, the Charity receives 100% of the donation. Your details are safe with Givey and donating is completely secure. Whatsmore, they never share your email address with any third parties except the Charity you donate to.
