Severe burn injury remains a major cause of death and lifelong disability in Tanzania, particularly among young children. Burn mortality in East Africa is among the highest globally, driven by delayed presentation, inconsistent first aid, limited access to specialists, and high
rates of infection.
Tanzania is four times the size of the UK yet has only four burn referral centres. Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi serves a vast catchment area, with patients often travelling long distances to reach care. The hospital manages a constant burden of complex
burn injuries with limited ward, high-dependency, and theatre capacity.
BFIRST supports sustainable burn care through specialist surgical missions. Funds raised will support a 10 day multidisciplinary visiting burn team delivering surgery, reconstruction,
training, and community burn prevention education.
