About
Year 6 is raising funds so that all children in the year group have the opportunity to attend the annual PGL trip in 2021! As Year 6 parents, together with Coleridge Families, we would like to raise money to give every child in the current Year 6 cohort the same annual opportunity that has been part of the Coleridge journey for many years - a four-night residential, outdoor education experience which forms a truly transformative part of their education. For a number of reasons, funding for this trip is exceptionally difficult this year. Certain grants that have been awarded in recent years to support residentials are not available and school finances are more challenging than they have ever been, compounded by the significant financial struggles many families are facing this year. The aim of this fundraiser is to ensure that the trip is fully inclusive. The funds raised will be directed by the school to those families that would otherwise not be able to afford to send their child. Whether a trip can go ahead will depend on whether we can raise enough funds to make sure that every child in Year 6 who wishes to go on this trip will be able to do so regardless of financial circumstances. If you are able to donate to this fund in any way, Year 6 would be very grateful. Donations from friends and family welcome too, and please do not forget to tick Gift Aid and, if applicable, to check if your company may offer a corporate matching scheme for charity donations (Coleridge Families is the registered UK charity). Why PGL? There is no doubt that the cancellation of the annual PGL trip in 2020, whilst inevitable, was a huge blow to last year’s leavers. It is difficult to measure the impact that the Covid-related deprivations had on the affected children, but suffice to say that, in the children’s view, the abandonment of the PGL trip is still the single-most significant loss that they suffered and the one that they regret the most. No other experience in their primary school years comes close to fostering that sense of independence and engendering ongoing bonds between the kids and teachers across the whole year group. For some children it will be the only chance to sit in a boat or go abseiling or visit a beach. This year, more than ever, outdoor education is not just a nice to have. Children have spent an unprecedented time indoors and a week of outdoor-based activities, bonding and wholesome fun with their friends away from home will have immeasurable benefits for their wellbeing and personal development. All children are having to show immense resilience in facing all the restrictions and limitations that the pandemic is putting on them on a daily basis. As Year 6 parents, we feel that it would not only be a huge disappointment but a truly blank space in their Coleridge life if our Year 6 children missed out on this particular experience, too (Covid permitting). For more details on what the trip entails and how PGL manage Covid-safety, please see the short video below. The trip is scheduled to take place in June 2021 and the children and teachers would be travelling in their existing Covid-bubble. https://www.pgl.co.uk/en-gb/school-trips/resources/promotional-videos/primary-schools-videos The Small Print Should the trip not be able to go ahead due to Covid-restrictions, all donations will be refunded.
