The Kavusi Project Malawi 2017
Story

The Camp Kavusi project in Malawi was started 7 years ago by Colin Andrews, Group Scout Leader of 1st Poulner Scout Group.

The aims of this project are to: - develop cross cultural activities for both nationalities to learn and grow - to develop young people’s knowledge, skills and attitudes - to encourage and foster an ethos of volunteering and community self-help. - to train young leaders from both the UK and Malawi to do the same

WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED SO FAR? The project has consisted of building a campsite for scout activities and leader training at Kavusi, near Mzuzu for young scout leaders who have teamed up with the Tiyeni Fund to develop an experimental agricultural farm on the campsite, using sustainable farming methods, which youngsters can then take back to their own villages and communities.

We have designed and built 275 four-person desk and bench sets for a local school of 1,100 students. 1st Poulner Scouts are trained in carpentry skills, which they pass on to the Malawian scouts – along with donated tools – who continue building desks. This has been a joint project with the Malawi scouts and is still continuing today.

The project has also been able to provide funding to allow 5 orphaned scouts the opportunity to attend secondary education in Malawi. This has not only elevated their own aspirations but that of others around them who have seen their achievements and effort recognised and rewarded.

There are 17 Explorer Scouts and 6 leaders who will be venturing over to Malawi in July 2017. They will be living in local homes and will also be working with the Malawi Scouts to continue development of the Kavusi Campsite. The transformation so far has been outstanding.

HOW YOU CAN HELP? Please help this project continue by making a donation on this site.

All the Explorer Scouts travelling to Malawi in 2017 are paying for their own fares.

We are raising funds to pay for camping and other equipment to leave at the Kavusi campsite for the Malawian scouts to develop self-help and sustainability through scouting.

Anything you can give will be very much appreciated. Thank You.

Yours in scouting, 1st Poulner Scout Group Explorer Scouts
