Dave Maloney, the 216 Squadron Association Secretary and Historian continues his research looking for the names of personnel who served with Two Sixteen. During this research Dave discovered the names of nine Squadron personnel who had been killed as a result of 216 Squadron aircraft crashes between WWI and WWII. Initially Dave was unable to ascertain their final resting places.
After posting on line Dave was contacted by Steve Rogers of The War Graves Photographic Project who had a spreadsheet of personnel in graves with no headstones in the Cairo New British Protestant cemetery. Searching through this spreadsheet It was discovered that eight of the nine personnel identified were interred there.
Unfortunately, “No Headstone” was annotated against all eight names.
Dave was informed that the MOD did not supply or pay for headstones on the graves of serving personnel who died. Headstones of those who died on active service but outside of conflict were not supplied by the MOD and such graves that have headstones are believed to have been purchased with private funds. They would probably have been marked in the past with something made locally and paid for by members of the Squadron.
After further research Dave contacted the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and the MOD. There are no objections to these graves having Headstones placed upon them and the CWGC can help in getting them made, placed on the graves and be looked after in perpetuity.
To that end the 216 Squadron Association Committee have agreed to donate £2,160 (25% of the estimated costs) to this cause, and are asking, you, our membership and the rest of the 216 Squadron family to assist with the remaining fundraising.
Although the MOD will not allow personal inscriptions on these Headstones, we are hopeful that through Genealogical means we can make contact with living relatives of our fallen comrades, and advise them of what we hope to achieve.
