Petre Chapel is Grade II* Listed and has been owned by Historic Chapels Trust since 2010. It is one of Essex’s miniature treasures but when HCT acquired the chapel it had had suffered vandalism and desecration. HCT has already completed repairs to the dangerous spire and stonework but there is much more still to do. The chapel has a glorious and richly decorated hammer beam roof, supported by gilded angels, which are being damaged because of the poor state of the tiled roof, which needs to be completely replaced. We have raised over £140,000 towards this project but we still have £45,000 to raise if we are to save the angels of Petre Chapel.
