Maya Productions Ltd

Diverse Theatre That Creates Change

This year, Maya Productions celebrates 25 years since its first production, Over Here by Neil Biswas, toured the UK. From that moment, until now, we have produced 21 shows and reached over 19,700 audiences.

Maya makes diverse theatre that creates change, bringing together organisations and individuals who passionately want their work to enable social change and racial justice in the arts. Through our work, and that of other incredible diverse-led organisations, we are beginning to see greater representation of ethnically diverse communities on and off stage. But there is still a long way to go.

Over the past two years we have performed to audiences of 2000+, involved over 500 people in participatory and professional development activities and connected to many more with our online educational resources.

Due to the impact of Covid19 we have been forced to postpone projects, and have moved to working where we can online.

Our 2020 participation project ROOTS TO ROOTS was delivered as an online creative writing project to 19 young people in Sheffield schools and youth groups at the height of lockdown.

We are currently supporting 6 ethnically diverse industry professionals to explore their career pathways through a coaching and mentoring project.

Behind closed doors we are continuing to develop BENNY AND THE GREYCATS, a new musical sharing the story of an Anglo-Indian family of musicians who swap playing in a jazz band in South India to build a new life in Sheffield in the 1960s.

“Maya Productions, in making work inspired by BAME participants, and employing a truly diverse team of professional theatre artists, is leading the way for the Creative Case for Diversity” – Chris Elwell, Artistic Director, Half Moon Theatre.
