Oxford Community Action is raising £3,650 for Oxford Community Action
About
We are raising money for SheCan Academy, an extraordinary Somali organisation that provides vocational training for local orphan girls. SheCan Academy began in 2009 as an orphanage for girls between 10 and 20 years of age. Project manager Bahja Ali Warsame and her team have sought to improve the girls’ lot in every way they can. They provide them with a free high school education. And in 2021, they expanded to also teach culinary, sewing, and cosmetics courses. These courses allow some of Mogadishu’s most vulnerable young women to escape poverty and create a new life for themselves. This Christmas, we are hoping to raise £3,650 to fund the next three months of vocational programs for sixty girl orphans. 100% of every pound you donate goes directly to the girls’ vocational training in cooking, makeup, and henna. Can you help them get the training they need to become financially independent? Suggested donations: £15 – one girl’s materials for a henna course £60 – one girl’s materials for a makeup course £170– one teacher’s wages for three months Thank you for your support, Oxford Community Action and SheCan Academy For more information, see below or get in touch at info@oxfordcommunityaction.org. Oxford Community Action is a not for profit company founded in 2020 to support Black and Minoritised Individuals and Communities to tackle and overcome barriers created by structural inequalities (e.g. labour market and ethnic health inequalities) that prevent BAME individuals and communities from reaching their full potential and enjoying equal representation and participation as active citizens within UK institutions and wider civil society. OCA have been supporting SheCan Academy for a long time. Through our local football tournaments, our communities have raised over £5,000 for SheCan Academy so far. The last SheCan Academy sewing program – the first of its kind – was fully OCA-funded. It helped twenty girls gain the skills to become financially independent. If this fundraiser doesn’t succeed at raising the total sum, we will keep fundraising by other means, including through our OCA Football Cup.
