Sheffield ME and Fibromyalgia Group has been supporting people living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia in South Yorkshire for over 20 years. These are chronic debilitating illnesses affecting thousands of people in South Yorkshire and causing a wide range of symptoms such as extreme pain, profound fatigue and cognitive disturbances. 25% of people living with ME are severely affected, being housebound or even bedbound. As these conditions aren’t well known among the medical, statutory and wider public, people living with these illnesses are often misunderstood and extremely isolated. Our charity provides a supportive community as well as social care and benefits support, group activities to help manage symptoms and socialise, and seeks to raise awareness of these conditions. We’re also now supporting people with long covid. Many of our members, like Marie, express themselves through arts and crafts, giving enjoyment and a sense of achievement. There are real talents in this community, and we’d like to share these with the people of Sheffield! Marie who loves the arts is initiating this fundraising for our charity to organise inclusive arts classes for people living with ME, fibromyalgia and long covid. Classes would be online, accessible by any of our members from their own home or bed. This would encourage people to create their own art within their own capacity. If enough funds are raised, this artwork could be brought to light during an arts exhibition in Sheffield later this year. The amazing paintings, sculptures, writings, textiles and more from our great community would be showcased which would both celebrate talents and help raise awareness of these conditions.
