Hello, Caroline here.
Initially I wanted to walk a challenging distance for my own achievement. I have had problems with my knees for a little while and amidst the fear that they would one day give up the fight I wanted to make sure I had done something I would be proud of, even if it meant speeding up the process.
I began talking about my planned walk across The Downs at work, and a couple of people asked if I was doing it for charity. Suddenly it felt crazy not to, so I chose a charity that I hear so much about from clients at work - a charity my son and I have benefitted from ourselves. mASCot is a local organisation that provides support, space, social activities, clubs and meet-ups for children/young people (and parents) who have Autistic Spectrum Condition.
I've seen so many parents reach out on the mASCot Facebook page and find helpful advice or just empathy and connection with other parents who understand how challenging it is raising kids on the spectrum.
So! I am planning to walk a section of the South Downs Way, between Shoreham and Eastbourne. It will bring me 2 nights sleeping out in the wild in a bivy bag, and three days walking, clocking up no less than 44 miles /71km in total.
Its all happening August Bank Holiday, by which time all the lunges, squats, step-ups, stretches, leg massage, magnesium cream, resistance band work and many many walks up and down hills will hopefully have prepared me for this feat.
So chuck some coins in the pot will you?
