Children and young people's wellbeing in Herefordshire
Story

The CLD Trust is a mental health and wellbeing charity based in Herefordshire. As an organisation we aim to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people, children, and some adults through the provision of Talking therapies, support, education, training and participation.

With one in four adults at any one time experiencing a mental health issue and mental ill health being the single largest disability and cost to the NHS, it is vital that early help is provided to young people. Over half of all lifetime incidences of mental ill health have occurred by the age of 14 and this rises to 75% in the early 20's. Research shows that early intervention can have a significant impact on young people's ability to cope and develop in adult life in addition to reducing their early distress.

Healthy Minds Healthy Futures is our talking therapy service. Over 1200 young people a year are referred by GPs and other health professionals for counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy for help with issues including relationship problems, anxiety, stress, low mood, self –harm, abuse, eating difficulties and bullying. A safe space is provided for young people to work with a qualified practitioner to overcome or manage their issues and difficulties to improve their lives and wellbeing.

Strong Young Minds is our early intervention programme providing one to one support, advocacy, workshops and training for young people, professionals and parents/carers. A range of support is available to help young people who are starting to experience difficulties and may need support to overcome barriers. Participation work is a key element of this programme and young people themselves are recruited and trained to provide support to peers and to raise awareness of mental health and reduce the stigma which surrounds mental ill health.

Herefordshire CYP-IAPT Wellbeing Ambassadors are a group of young people who have volunteered to take part in NHS England’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme (CYP-IAPT). This is part of an England wide approach to transforming access to psychological therapies. Wellbeing Ambassadors are involved in a range of activities including the recruitment and selection of staff, board meetings, professionals training and the development of local services. Each year the CLD Trust receives far more referrals for service than funding allows.

Please help young people by donating what you can to our service and know that you are making a very real difference to young lives.
